 Why Choose Topcoat? Minimize

Most homeowners choose a paint contractor by obtaining three names and acquiring estimates from each. Often, Topcoat is among the three names. Sometimes we are awarded the project, and sometimes we are not. Customers tell me that it is a confusing process, particularly in Vermont in the winter. Some customers perceive painting as a seasonal business, and many paint companies feed this perception by offering "special off-season rates". While enticing, this leads to prices that are not appropriate to the work you are asking for. We carry a crew of interior employees year round, with consistent pricing, value and service no matter what the weather. Several times each year, we are called to consult and salvage situations where the painter did not finish the job, or did not produce acceptable quality. Often, that painter is not taking your calls anymore. In the interest of consumer awareness, we offer the following paint company selection tips:

Price: When considering estimates, compare apples to apples. Require written estimates (not verbal promises) regarding the amount of preparation, quality of materials, number of coats, etc. The lowest price is seldom the best value.

Promptness: A contractor who arrives on time and prepared for the estimate is more likely to meet the schedule of your project.

Communications: How a contractor responds to phone calls can be an indication of how your communications will go during the job and after it is completed.

Insurance: Adequate insurance is important for your protection and that of the paint crew. Proper coverage will include a liability policy (for property damage) and a workers compensation policy to protect employees working on the job. Ask to see a Certificate of Insurance.

Warranty: A professional contractor will stand behind his work and offer a written warranty. However, if the company goes out of business (or can't be located), that warranty is useless. The stability of the company is as important as the warranty.

References: A contractor should be able to produce a list of recent local customers. Contact two or three of these customers to learn about their experiences with the contractor.

Consumer Awareness: During the initial meeting, is the contractor listening carefully to what you are asking for? He should listen to your comments and questions and make recommendations suited to your needs and desires.

Trust: A paint crew may be in your home for a week or sometimes much longer. Be certain that you feel comfortable with the image you are being presented with. Also, the references you call should be able to tell you about the crew that did the work and whether it was a pleasure.
